Fun fact, did you know that our love of chocolate on Valentine's Day comes from the fact that people are convinced that it is an aphrodisiac?
We have Montezuma, the great Aztec emperor to thank for this one. Legend has it that this warrior-king drank over forty cups of hot chocolate each day to increase his virility. Evidently he was quite the ladies man.
But there is some truth to our obsession with chocolate on this day of love. Chocolate does contain two chemical compounds associated with love and desire: tryptophan, a building block of serotonin, and phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine.
However, there is no real science to back up quantifying chocolate as this legendary substance that will put you in the mood or enhance your virility. Sorry, Montezuma.
